Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen has revealed he has been speaking to former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson as Fulham aim to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Meulensteen's side are currently bottom of the table with 19 points, and are four points from safety having collected just six wins throughout the entire campaign.

And Meulensteen, who took over from the sacked Martin Jol in December, says his former manager at United has been on hand to offer advice to his ex-assistant at Old Trafford.

"I have spoken to him like I do, on and off. Sometimes he rings me and sometimes I ring him. He is always a phone call away," Meulensteen said.

"I have always felt that whenever we stared into adversity or disappointment, I have always found him remarkably strong in those moments. You could never spot any doubt in his words or behaviour, that always transferred back to the players and I want to do exactly the same [at Fulham]."

Meulensteen feels Fulham require seven wins from their remaining 14 games in order to survive, saying: "I would think from the 14 games we should probably have to win half of them if you look at adding up the points where you get to."

And he was asked whether he had the full backing of club owner Shahid Khan, to which he replied: "Yes, 100%. And more importantly I have got the full confidence of the playing squad because they have to do the job."
