Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has been named as the Premier League Manager of the Month for January, with in-form Adam Johnson picking up the Player of the Month award.

Former City winger Johnson, 26, took the accolade after scoring five times in four league games, including a hat trick in a 4-1 win at Fulham, as Sunderland enjoyed a dramatic upturn in form. He also struck as the Black Cats beat Manchester United to reach the Capital One Cup final.

His performances have led to calls for him to be included in England's World Cup squad. He has played for England 12 times, but has been capped only twice since Roy Hodgson became England boss almost two years ago.

And he told Sunderland's official website: "It's always nice looking back on personal awards, but the main thing has been our rise up the league - that and getting to the cup final have been the main highlights for me.

"It's been one of those spells I'm going through where everything's clicked for me. I feel good about myself and we're looking like a good team."

Pellegrini took the managerial award for the second time in succession after seeing his side hit 14 goals as they won all four of their league matches in January. That month also saw them progress to Wembley in the Capital One Cup and defeat Watford in the FA Cup.
