Tribunal uphold Carroll's three-match ban

The FA's decision to reject West Ham's appeal against Andy Carroll's three-match ban has been upheld by an independent tribunal.

Carroll will now miss West Ham's matches against Aston Villa, Norwich and Southampton after being sent off for an aerial clash with Swansea defender Chico Flores in his side's 2-0 win on Saturday. West Ham manager Sam Allardyce suggested Flores had overreacted after clutching his face, and Carroll himself called the FA's original decision to uphold the ban 'disgraceful'.

West Ham had threatened legal action against the FA when their initial attempt to see the suspension overturn was turned down.

An FA statement said: "An independent arbitration tribunal convened under FA Rule K has dismissed a legal challenge brought by West Ham United and Andy Carroll in relation to the red card received by Carroll in the match between West Ham United FC and Swansea on February 1, 2014.

"The independent tribunal resolved that there was no serious issue to be tried and also awarded The FA its costs."

A West Ham statement said: "Whilst West Ham United are obviously disappointed at the decision, as we have made clear throughout, we respect the rules of football and shall abide by them."

West Ham are currently 18th in the Premier League table.
