Worker dies outside World Cup venue in Brazil - report

A worker has been killed in an accident outside a World Cup stadium in the Brazilian jungle city of Manaus, according to local organisers.

The worker is reported to have died on Friday while he was dismantling a crane that had been used to install the roof at the Arena da Amazonia.

It is the third death linked to the stadium's construction. In December, a worker died there after falling 115 feet (35 metres) while working on the stadium roof. Another worker died there in March after falling from a scaffold and hitting his head.

A spokesman said the man was working for Portuguese multinational company Martifer. According to Brazilian media, the worker was a 55-year-old man from Portugal. He is said to have sustained a head injury when he was hit by a metal bar.

An inspection visit by the Amazonas state governor at the stadium scheduled for Friday was cancelled.

The Arena da Amazonia is one of five stadiums still under construction with less than five months to go before the start of the World Cup. Local organisers insist construction at the site was nearly 97% complete when the accident happened.

The stadium is due to host four World Cup matches next June, including England's match against Italy and the United States' fixture with Portugal.

In November, two workers were killed at the stadium which will host the World Cup opener in Sao Paulo when a crane collapsed. A worked also died in 2012 at the construction site of the stadium in the nation's capital, Brasilia.
