Rooney: I want to break Charlton's United record

Wayne Rooney has indicated he wants to break Sir Bobby Charlton's club scoring record at Manchester United, but when asked about his future at the club the striker avoided the issue.

Rooney, whose contract at Old Trafford is due to expire at the end of next season, spoke to BBC's Football Focus ahead of United's Premier League clash with Fulham on Sunday.

The striker is currently 41 goals short of Charlton's record and stated the target is clearly in his aims, although when asked about a new contract at the club Rooney chose to avoid the question.

"It is a great aim for myself to try and get Sir Bobby's record, both at club and international level," Rooney said. "It is something which I would like to do. If I can do that I would be really proud because it has stood for a long time.

When asked about his future with the club, Rooney added: "I've said all along I'm focusing on the football and will try to do as well as I can for the team and help the team be successful."

Reports emerged in January that Rooney was close to penning a new deal with United, which could see him earn around £300,000-a-week, while Chelsea also had two bids for him turned down last summer.
