Giroud issues Twitter apology over affair claims

Olivier Giroud has taken to Twitter to issue a public apology after allegations that glamour model Celia Kay spent the night in the Arsenal striker's hotel room on the eve of a Premier League fixture.

The story originally surfaced in The Sun last week and the Frenchman took legal advice.

But around an hour before Arsenal's FA Cup tie with Liverpool at the Emirates on Sunday, Giroud posted a series of tweets, first in English, then in French.

He continued:

Giroud did not start in the 2-1 win, but did come on as a late substitute. Arsene Wenger explained the decision by revealing Giroud had "looked a bit tired recently".

Speaking to reporters, he added: "I know where you want to lead me, slowly but surely. [Giroud] has made a statement. For the rest we will deal with it internally. I want to respect his privacy."

Giroud is expected to be disciplined within the club and should return to the starting line-up for Wednesday's Champions League match with Bayern Munich.

The hotel incident was reported to have taken place the night before Arsenal's league win over Crystal Palace on February 2, in which Giroud played the full 90 minutes.
