Didier Drogba has been given permission to wear a protective cast in Ivory Coast's opening match against Portugal on Tuesday.

The Chelsea striker fractured his arm in a warm-up match against Japan on June 4, and after initial fears that he would miss much of the World Cup, Drogba trained with his team-mates on Monday.

In a statement, FIFA's head of media Nicolas Maingot confirmed the referee was happy with the lightweight cast.

"Regarding Didier Drogba, the referee of the match Jorge Larrionda has okayed the cast which Didier Drogba will use to play," he said. "The cast has been seen by the Portuguese delegation at yesterday's match co-ordination meeting."

The omens could be good for Drogba, who trained with team-mates on Monday, as former England striker Gary Lineker wore a lightweight cast on his forearm during the 1986 World Cup and finished as the tournament's top goalscorer.
