Rooney responds to coin attack
Wayne Rooney responded to a first-half coin attack by scoring a stunning goal at Crystal Palace as the Manchester United striker remained the centre of attention.
Fresh from signing his headline-grabbing new £300,000-a-week contract at Old Trafford, the England player endured foul abuse as he took a first-half corner and handed a coin which was thrown at him to officials.
He produced in a mature and hard-working display having had his club future settled until 2019, volleying with great control from the edge of the penalty area into the far corner after being picked out by Patrice Evra in the 68th minute,
This was Rooney's 300th Premier League appearance for United and his 151st goal doubled the lead Robin van Persie had given them from the penalty spot, ensuring a 2-0 victory.
Van Persie converted with aplomb six minutes before Rooney struck, with Patrice Evra again having been the chance supplier; the defender was barged over just inside the penalty area by Palace forward Marouane Chamakh.
After the match, Rooney said: "I have let my football do the talking. I am happy and settled.
"Whether I signed a new deal or not, I always give 100%. The deal was important. It has more or less been agreed for a month just the fine details needed finishing off. Thankfully it is done."
There had been tension before the game as United returned to the scene of Eric Cantona's infamous kung-fu kick on a Palace supporter in 1995, with the club's fans having planned to wear masks showing the Frenchman's face.
Palace were reportedly ready to confiscate the masks or refuse entry to fans but Rooney, rather than anything related to the former United legend, who dominated proceedings.
