We can do a Liverpool, says Moyes

David Moyes believes Manchester United can 'do a Liverpool' and win the Champions League despite not being at their strongest.

United travel to Greece on Tuesday to face Olympiakos in the first leg of their European last-16 tie, but manager Moyes indicated his side do not have to be the best in Europe to win the competition.

Moyes watched United enjoy a 2-0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday - in which Wayne Rooney sealed his new £300,000-a-week deal with a goal - and is beginning to see their fortunes turn around after a hectic start to his Old Trafford tenure.

The Scot is keen to secure a top-four finish and Champions League qualification in his maiden season in charge, and referenced Liverpool's 2005 memorable comeback triumph in Istanbul as an inspiration to United's plight.

"It isn't always the best teams that get to the final in Europe. Liverpool in 2005 gives us hope, but in any cup competition you always have a chance," Moyes said.

"I knew it was going to be a hard competition before it started. Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid and PSG are all top clubs."

Moyes will be without record £37.1 million signing Juan Mata for the trip to Greece as the winger is cup-tied having appeared for Chelsea earlier in the competition.

However, following a recent training break in Dubai, Moyes stated his relationship with the United players is vastly flourishing.

"It gave us the chance to be together," Moyes said. "We didn't need loads of training, but it was probably the first time I've had a real chance to get together with the players.

"We trained every day, had some good weather and played golf. It gave me the chance to spend some time with the players."
