Spurs through after thriller, but Swans' wings clipped by Napoli

Two clinical finishes from Emmanuel Adebayor ensured Tottenham Hotspur came back from 2-0 down on aggregate to advance to the last 16 of the Europa League at the expense of Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.

Dnipro, who won the first leg 1-0 in Ukraine, doubled their advantage shortly after half time when Roman Zozulya headed home Ruslan Rotan's cross.

The away goal meant Spurs needed to score three - and Christian Eriksen got them underway in the 56th minute with a curling free kick that just beat goalkeeper Denys Boyko.

• Juventus set up an all-Italian last 16 tie with Fiorentina after a second successive 2-0 win over Trabzonspor. Arturo Vidal and Pablo Osvaldo, on loan from Southampton, put the tie beyond the hosts inside 34 minutes.
• Fiorentina were held 1-1 by Esbjerg - but the 3-1 first-leg win was enough to send the Florence side through.
• Sevilla set up a mouth-watering showdown with arch-rivals Real Betis in the last 16 after seeing off the challenge of Maribor with a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Jose Antonio Reyes and Kevin Gameiro either side of half-time.
• Seville neighbours Betis booked their spot in the last 16 after an impressive 2-0 victory in Rubin Kazan.
• Juninho Quixada's 89th-minute goal ensured Ludogorets Razgrad's remarkable Europa League campaign continued with a stunning 4-3 aggregate win over Lazio. Razgrad now face another giant of European football, Valencia, whose 2-0 first-leg win over Dynamo Kiev was enough after a 0-0 in Spain.
• An 80th minute goal from Alexandre Lacazette was enough to separate Lyon and Chornomorets. The French side now take on Viktoria Plzen, who defeated 2009 champions Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate.
• Salzburg waltzed into the last 16 with an unexpectedly comfortable 6-1 aggregate success against Dutch champions Ajax and will meet Basel in the next round after they advanced with a convincing 3-0 win over Maccabi Tel-Aviv at St Jakob-Park.
• AZ Alkmaar are through thanks to a 1-1 draw with Liberec earned them a 2-1 aggregate win. The Dutch face Anzhi Machachkala after winning 2-0 at Racing Genk.

Shortly after, Zozulya was sent off for appearing to headbutt Jan Vertonghen. And Spurs did not need much more of an invitation to go on and win the game.

Adebayor's goals came in the space of four minutes, first latching onto Eriksen's clever pass to prod home before expertly controlling Ezekiel Fryer's long ball and firing home the goal that put Spurs into the last 16.

Tim Sherwood's side will next face Portuguese giants Benfica, who eased past PAOK Salonika 3-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate.

Earlier in the night, Swansea's Europa League adventure was ended after Gonzalo Higuain and Gokhan Inler notched late goals to earn Napoli a 3-1 win and with it a place in the last 16.

But how different it could have been.

The Swans, playing in their first ever knockout round in European competition, turned in an impressive display but just fell short at the San Paolo Stadium.

Lorenzo Insigne put the hosts ahead in the 16th minute before Jonathan De Guzman equalised on the half-hour mark.

Higuain came to the rescue in the 78th minute after a mix-up between Chico Flores and Neil Taylor to put Napoli back in front.

The Swans came agonisingly close to making it 2-2 with two minutes remaining but Napoli goalkeeper Jose Reina produced a fantastic one-handed save to repel Dwight Tiendalli's header.

Inler put the tie beyond any doubt when he scored his team's third seconds from time and Napoli will take on Porto next.

Napoli will face Porto in the last 16 after Nabil Ghilas struck a dramatic 86th-minute equaliser to send the Portuguese side through on away goals following a thrilling 3-3 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Porto, having thrown away a two-goal lead to draw the first leg 2-2, looked on their way out after falling 2-0 down in Germany to goals from Stefan Aigner and Alexander Meier.

The visitors fought back and managed to get on equal terms thanks to two Eliaquim Mangala headers, levelling the tie up at 4-4, but their good work looked to be for nothing as they conceded another goal to Meier with 14 minutes to go.

However, with time running out the Portuguese giants managed to fashion a late chance and substitute Ghilas was able to turn it home.
