Stoke were left "surprised and disappointed" by the FA's decision to charge Charlie Adam with violent conduct following an apparent stamp on Olivier Giroud during their 1-0 win against Arsenal on Saturday.

Referee Mike Jones did not book Adam after he appeared to bring his studs down on Giroud as he lay on the floor during the second half at the Britannia Stadium.

Stoke released a statement on their official website following the charge. It read: "Charlie and the club are surprised and disappointed to learn of [the charge] and will appeal vigorously against the decision."

Adam has until 6pm on Tuesday to respond to the charge.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was left angry with Stoke's approach during the match, refusing to comment specifically on the Adam incident before going on to claim Stoke have given away the highest number of fouls at home this season.
