Ozil jeered by Germany supporters

Mesut Ozil may have claimed he has put his poor form behind him but the Arsenal playmaker came under fire again on Wednesday when he was jeered by a section of Germany fans.

Supporters whistled their disapproval of Ozil when he was substituted in the 89th minute of Germany's's 1-0 victory against Chile despite him having provided an assist for Mario Gotze's goal.

Germany team manager Olivier Bierhoff was angered by the reaction. He said: "I don't understand the whistling. I find it a shame that a player such as Mesut is picked out. I would hope for different support for a game like that."

Ozil has been suffering a difficult time at Arsenal, having been rested in recent weeks by Arsene Wenger after a dip in form.

His Champions League penalty miss against Bayern Munich brought matters to a head with the manager admitting Ozil had been mentally affected by it.

But Arsenal's club-record £42.5 million signing claimed this week that he was getting back to his best and Germany team-mate Jerome Boateng insisted the fans' reaction was unfair. "They have some nerve. You can't shine all the time, " he said.

The whistling was all the more surprising give that Ozil was presented with the supporters' 2013 National Team Player of the Year award before the game.

Ozil's Arsenal team-mate Per Mertesacker also played in the game, completing the full 90 minutes in for Germany, while Andre Schurrle - fresh from a hat-trick for Chelsea against Fulham on Saturday - was given 45 minutes in place of Miroslav Klose.

Bale force drives Wales

• Wales 3-1 Iceland
• Gareth Bale guided Wales to victory over Iceland in Cardiff with a star-turn that included another outstanding solo goal.
• The winger provided the free-kick with which James Collins headed Wales in front after 12 minutes, before Ashley Williams put through his own goal to give Iceland an equaliser.
• Sam Vokes put Wales back in front on 63 minutes with a header before Bale wrapped things up, beaten his man on the touchline in midfield before sprinting into the box, cutting inside, and curling an unstoppable shot into the bottom left corner.
• Poland 0-1 Scotland
• Scott Brown crashed home an emphatic winner for Scotland as they continued their recent improvement under Gordon Strachan.
• Scotland are now unbeaten in their last five games, and Brown ensured it was a victory with a thunderous shot from the edge of the box with 13 minutes remaining in Warsaw, leaving Wojciech Szczesny with no chance in the Poland goal.
• Cyprus 0-0 Northern Ireland
• Northern Ireland have now gone 10 away friendlies without scoring a goal, a run that extends back to 2006.
• Gareth McAuley was sent off for a professional foul on 76 minutes, hauling down Demetris Christofi when he was through on goal. Martin Peterson and JamieWard came closest for Northern Ireland.

Marouane Fellaini - still without a goal for Manchester United since his £27.5m summer move from Everton - was on target for Belgium, but they suffered a late setback in a 2-2 draw with the Ivory Coast.

Fellaini headed in Dries Mertens' corner on 17 minutes, with Radja Nainggolan adding the second early in the second half. However, after Aston Villa's Christian Benteke contrived to miss an open goal from eight yards, Belgium were made to pay. Didier Drogba pulled a goal back for the Ivory Coast in the 74th minute before Swansea striker Wilfried Bony equalised in injury time.

Ozil's Arsenal team-mate Tomas Rosicky celebrated his new contract at the Emirates with the opening goal in the Czech Republic's 2-2 draw with Norway. Rosicky made the breakthrough after 11 minutes, with West Brom's Matej Vydra re-establishing the home side's advantage after Tarik Elyounoussi equalised for the visitors. It looked as though the Czechs would hold on for the win until Morten Gamst Pedersen struck with two minutes remaining.

Neymar further cemented his place as Brazil's key man with a hat-trick against South Africa, but even he was put in the shade momentarily by a thunderbolt from Fernandinho as the Manchester City midfielder opened his international account from 30 yards. Chelsea midfielder Oscar had opened the scoring in what proved to be a 5-0 rout.

Branislav Ivanovic gifted the opening goal of the game to the Republic of Ireland, but Serbia still ran out 2-1 winners in Dublin. Ivanovic was short with a backpass in the eighth minute, allowing Shane Long to put the Irish in front, but Serbia hit back in the second half as first James McCarthy scored an own goal then Filip Djordjevic won the match on the hour mark.

Elsewhere, recent Chelsea signing Mohamed Salah scored the second goal of a 2-0 win for Egypt against Bosnia-Herzegovina, while Park Chu-Young - on loan at Watford from Arsenal - was on target for South Korea against Greece, also a 2-0 win. Former Everton and Millwall striker Tim Cahill became the all-time leading goalscorer for Australia as they raced into a 3-0 lead against Ecuador, only to lose 4-3 after a dramatic comeback, Edison Mendez scoring the winner in the second minute of stoppage time.
