Terry: Cahill is the man for England

John Terry has admitted his playing days for England are over but has backed Chelsea team-mate Gary Cahill to take over his role in the national side.

Terry has not played for his country since announcing his retirement following Euro 2012, but his impressive Premier League form this season has seen him linked with a place in Roy Hodgson's final 2014 World Cup squad.

However, speaking after Chelsea's impressive 4-0 league win over Tottenham on Saturday, Terry insisted he has "moved on" from his England saga and believes Cahill is the man to replace him.

"My days are gone. It's down to Gary and the young boys to push on for our country," Terry told Sky Sports. "A lot went on with me and England. I loved playing for my country and was proud to captain my country. But things have changed and I've moved on.

"We have struck up a great relationship on and off the pitch. We do love playing together. He made his debut with me for England as well. Since I came to the club he seems to get better and better every game. He's great in the air and reads it well. He's the man for England going forward."
