Manchester City have appointed former Barcelona and Liverpool coach Rodolfo Borrell as Global Technical Director.

Borrell, 43, was Liverpool's head of academy coaching until his unexpected departure in November.

He joined Liverpool in 2009 after spending 13 years at Barcelona, where he had worked with Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi as they progressed through the club's youth system.

He joins two other prominent former Barcelona employees who hold key roles behind the scenes at City. Ferran Soriano is chief executive while Txiki Begiristain has been director of football since 2012.

Borrell was brought to Liverpool by Rafa Benitez in 2009 and was credited with helping to improve their academy after players such as Raheem Sterling and Jon Flanagan broke into the first team.

He was also Liverpool's reserve-team manager until he and Academy director Frank McParland left in an overhaul in November.
