Moyes: I'm planning for long United stay

David Moyes insists he is still planning for long-term Manchester United future and does not fear the sack.

The manager has presided over United's fall to seventh place in the Premier League but remains convinced he will be a huge success at Old Trafford.

• David Moyes have vowed to give the Manchester United fans a night to remember as they fight to stay in the Champions League against Olympiakos on Wednesday.
• United begin the second leg 2-0 down after a poor performance in Greece three weeks ago but manager Moyes is determined to deliver one of the great European nights at Old Trafford.
• The Scot is motivated by the memories of the last time United won a European tie after losing the first leg 2-0, when Bryan Robson inspired Ron Atkinson's team to a 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1984.
• "The support inside Old Trafford has been phenomenal," Moyes said. "I think the players will tell you, the first thing I mentioned was that we need to give something back: me, the team, we need to make sure we work together to give them a night to remember.
• "We will leave nothing behind on the night and give everything to get through to the next round. If we can go through it would be a massive lift. We know we have got ourselves in a poor position being 2-0 down.
• "It is only twice Manchester United have done that [come back from 2-0 down]. I think 1984 was the recent one against Barcelona, Robbo with the two goals. It is not something that has happened a lot but it is something we have to make happen."

ESPN understands that key boardroom figures have turned against the Scot, with Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Liverpool harming his cause.

However, before United's Champions League last-16 second leg against Olympiakos at Old Trafford on Wednesday, Moyes was asked whether the club's owners, the Glazer family, had given him any assurances his job was safe.

Moyes replied: "The biggest assurance is that they let me get on with the job, they never discuss it [my position]. We talk about the future and we make big plans going forward. That is why they gave me a six-year contract. This is not a club that works on a short-term vision, it is a long term one."

United have a 2-0 deficit to turn around against Olympiakos after the first leg in Greece, but Moyes does not believe his future depends on them managing it.

"My future has not changed one bit," he said. "I have got a great job, know exactly the direction I want to go in. It has not been the season we wanted but I have ideas I want to put in place. Now the most important thing is Olympiakos."

Moyes promised the long-suffering United supporters that their sudden slump will be reversed and that the 13-times Premier League champions will return to a position of dominance.

He said: "They have seen great success here in the past and will see great success again in the future. This club is the biggest club in the world, it might not feel it today, but it will rise again.

"The results at Old Trafford have been disappointing but it is not for want of trying. I see the players every day with the qualities they show me. They know they can play better, I don't think any of them are questioning that. But I believe in the players, I agree they have not showed it as often as they would like, but I hope they can show it tomorrow night."

Earlier on Tuesday, it was revealed that former boss Sir Alex Ferguson received more votes than the current Manchester United players in a fans' poll designed to work out who is to blame for the club's current crisis - however, Moyes predictably topped the poll with 52.55% of over 6,000 responses.
