James McCarthy says Arsenal will be looking nervously over their shoulder at Everton in the race for the fourth Champions League place.

The midfielder senses Arsene Wenger's side are vulnerable after they were humiliated 6-0 by Chelsea on the day the manager marked his 1,000th game in charge at the club last weekend.

Arsenal will try to bounce back against Swansea on Tuesday night and cement their position in the top four while Everton, in sixth, go to Newcastle.

"Arsenal will be looking over their shoulder now," McCarthy, whose club trail Arsenal by eight points with a game in hand and face them at home on April 6, said.

"Obviously they will be a bit worried. We have never written ourselves off [in the Champions League race]. We will give it our best shot and keep playing until it is mathematically not possible.

"It's still open. We are still confident we can achieve something big here this season but we need to get a few results and hope that results go for us elsewhere.

"The gaffer is confident enough so we will have a go. We want to play in European football."
