Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic will be the partnership in defence for Manchester United in their quarter-final tie against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

There had been suggestions that manager David Moyes could start with four centre-backs given the absence of left-back Patrice Evra through suspension and Rafael being an injury doubt.

However, Moyes has given Ferdinand a start, with Alexander Buttner filling in for Evra and Phil Jones playing at right-back. There is also a start for Ryan Giggs against the reigning European champions for the first leg at Old Trafford, who is making his 141st appearance in the competition (from the group stage to the final), and is just one behind Raul's competition record.

Ashley Young and Shinji Kagawa drop to the bench, with Juan Mata missing out as he is cup-tied.

Manchester United starting XI: De Gea, Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Buttner, Valencia, Carrick, Fellaini, Giggs, Rooney, Welbeck.

Substitutes: Lindegaard, Hernandez, Nani, Young, Fletcher, Januzaj, Kagawa.

Bayern Munich starting XI: Neuer, Ribery, Martinez, Robben, Rafinha, Boateng, Lahm, Muller, Alaba, Schweinsteiger, Kroos.

Substitutes: Starke, Van Buyten, Mandzukic, Shaqiri, Pizarro, Gotze, Hojbjerg.
