We'd be mad not to play Rooney in Munich, says Moyes

David Moyes insists Wayne Rooney is happy to "take an injection" for Manchester United's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich and that the club would be "mad" not to let him play.

The striker travelled to Germany for his Wednesday's quarter-final second leg at the Allianz Arena amid fears he would be ruled out with a toe injury; Rooney missed United's 4-0 win at Newcastle last Saturday, casting doubts over whether he would be at Moyes' disposal.

But Rooney trained with his team-mates on Tuesday and manager Moyes indicated the 28-year-old is determined to play.

"We wouldn't do anything medically wrong," Moyes said. "We take advice from the doctors who advise us. Everybody knows the character Wayne is and he is determined to play. If he is determined we'd be mad not to let him do so.

"We'll need a good performance from everybody. We can't have any passengers. I expect us to play better. And I believe we can. To get through, we will have to.

"It is a game all the players are looking forward to. I feel the players are going into the game in a good frame of mind. It is like a cup final for us. We have to make sure we go through on the night.

"My focus is on getting through. The players are ready and focused. We're relishing it."

Rooney earlier posted on his official Facebook account, saying: "Good training session with the lads ahead of the Bayern Munich match tomorrow night. It's a massive game for us against a top side but we'll be going in confident and looking to progress into the semi-finals."

At Bayern's pre-match news conference in Munich manager Pep Guardiola was in no doubt that Rooney would line up for United.

He said: "Rooney is going to play, 100%. He is going to play, I bet you a big glass of beer."

Guardiola also described Rooney as "a big player, one of the best I have seen in my career."

United will be without Fellaini and Rafael, however, with both players missing from training on Tuesday, while Jonny Evans is not quite ready to return.

United impressed in their quarter-final first leg with Champions League holders Bayern, holding them to a 1-1 draw after Bastian Schweinsteiger cancelled out Nemanja Vidic's opener.

David Moyes rested Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, who excelled against Bayern last week, for their 4-0 Premier League victory at Newcastle last weekend and, at least, United are not the only ones with injury problems.

Xherdan Shaqiri, Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez, Thiago Alcantara, Diego Contento, Tom Starke, Lukas Raeder and Holger Badstuber are all out for the German team through injury or suspension.
