United closing in on £30m deal for Shaw
Manchester United are edging closer to a £30 million deal for Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, which would see them fend off Premier League rivals Chelsea for the youngster's signature.
Rumours of United's interest in Shaw have been rife throughout the season and several reports emerged on Wednesday claiming the club are confident of tying up a deal for one of their main transfer targets.
United target given new Dortmund deal
- Borussia Dortmund have extended the contract of Manchester United target Ilkay Gundogan through to the end of the 2015-16 season, the club announced on Tuesday.
- Sidelined by a back injury, Gundogan has not played a minute of first-team football since August, and the new deal ends speculation that his career could be in jeopardy.
- Gundogan shone in Dortmund's run to the Champions League final last season and scored from the penalty spot against Bayern Munich.
- Last week, Dortmund manager Juergen Klopp revealed Gundogan would not be able to return this season, in all likelihood ending the 23-year-old's chances of making Germany's World Cup squad as well.
New manager David Moyes is keen to revitalise a United squad which has under-performed throughout a disastrous maiden season in charge and, while the Scot's future at Old Trafford still remains unclear, the club's hierarchy are beginning to increase their efforts in order to bolster for next season.
Southampton have previously warned their Premier League rivals off Shaw, but with Patrice Evra's anticipated departure from United at the end of the season, an attraction of regular first-team football could prove vital in the chase to secure the 18-year-old's services.
Shaw is one of several names on Moyes' summer shopping list, with the club reportedly planning a £200m overhaul in a bid to turn their fortunes around.
With the club facing a first season in 19 years without Champions League football, Moyes has long been linked with Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos.
Discussions have also been held with Sporting Lisbon over defensive midfielder William Carvalho, though United are unwilling to meet his £37 million buy-out clause, but Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan has been ruled out after signing a contract extension with the Bundesliga side.
United could also recoup a significant amount of money in transfer fees with the club set for an unprecedented clear-out in the summer. Captain Nemanja Vidic has already agreed to join Inter Milan while Evra, Shinji Kagawa, Rio Ferdinand, Javier Hernandez, Nani, Anderson and Wilfried Zaha could also be on their way out.
