Keane: United players should be ashamed

Roy Keane believes some Manchester United players "should be ashamed of themselves" after the club sacked David Moyes on Tuesday.

Speaking as a pundit for ITV ahead of Chelsea's Champions League semi-final first leg at Atletico Madrid, Keane stated Moyes should have been given more time at Old Trafford following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

"He certainly had a hard start when he took the job. The chief executive [Ed Woodward] didn't get the deals done that he wanted and there was a lot of negativity. They had a slow start and had no momentum," Keane said.

"It is a shame. He should have been give more time. Some of the Manchester United players should be ashamed of themselves, they really let him down."

"He [Sir Alex Ferguson] obviously put Moyes's name forward but the club eventually have to make the decision. You can't be critical of Ferguson.

"To be seventh in the league is disappointing and he had to take responsibility for that. But you still need people around you to help you. I don't think he has had that. Particularly from the players."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was also asked for his opinion on Moyes' departure, but the Portuguese refused to comment on the situation. Mourinho simply stated that he "felt sorry" for the Scot.

Ryan Giggs will now take over from Moyes in an interim capacity until the club find a new permanent manager. United have already reportedly made contact with Louis Van Gaal about the post, while Juergen Klopp is also considered to be a front-runner.

However, Pep Guardiola ruled himself out of the running as he laughed off the speculation when asked about the job ahead of Bayern Munich's Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
