Terry could be shock inclusion for Atletico clash

Chelsea captain John Terry is in line to recover from injury in time for Tuesday's Champions League semi-final second leg with Atletico Madrid, according to reports.

Terry, 33, was substituted with an ankle injury 20 minutes from time in the first leg of the tie at the Estadio Vicente Calderon last Tuesday, which ended 0-0.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said after that match that the Blues "would have to play the final" on May 24 for Terry to play for them again this season.

But Terry is apparently winning his race to be fit in time for the key clash at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

His return would represent a major boost for Chelsea, who saw goalkeeper Petr Cech ruled out for the rest of the season in the Spanish capital and have midfield duo Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel suspended for the second leg.

Having failed to claim an away goal in the first leg, Chelsea will hope their defence is as strong as possible to avoid an Atletico attack led by summer-target Diego Costa.

Mourinho admitted after the first leg that he would prioritise Champions League glory over triumphing in the Premier League title race, saying that he will likely rest some key players for Sunday's trip to title rivals Liverpool.

The Portuguese is set for a busy summer of transfer activity, with a striker top of his shopping list. However, Mourinho could begin his off-field business at Stamford Bridge with right-back Cesar Azpilicueta set to be rewarded with a new contract, according to the Daily Mail.

Azpilicueta has played mainly at left-back for Mourinho's side and has kept Ashely Cole out of the frame for the latter half of the season. His current deal expires in 2017 but the newspaper claims a new contract will see his wages rise to around £70,000-a-week.
