Ryan Giggs is considering becoming Manchester United's first player-manager for 87 years.

After being put in charge of the side on an interim basis following the sacking of David Moyes, the former player-coach says he may play himself against Norwich on Saturday.

Giggs, who has scored in every Premier League season except this one, would become United's first player-manager since Lal Hilditch in 1927 if he played in any of the four remaining games this term.

"I have not done much this week but I am still involved as a player as well," he said. "I have trained okay this week but the lads have looked sharp. There's 20-odd lads [in contention]."

Giggs, 40, will be without Robin van Persie and Rafael da Silva for his first game in charge at Old Trafford. Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic, who both missed Sunday's 2-0 defeat to Everton, are available again.

He joked that his unique scoring record may even be the motivation for his selection if he is a susbstitute and United are awarded a penalty. "Sorry Wayne!" Giggs laughed. "It would be nice [to keep the record going] but if it doesn't happen then it's not the end of the world."

In cheerful mood, the midfielder also joked that his new role had allowed him to extend his 23-year playing career.

"I have just given myself a five-year contract," he said. "I am using my power while I can."
