Chelsea assistant coach Rui Faria has been hit with a six-match stadium ban for a furious altercation with officials during the 2-1 defeat to Sunderland.

Faria was charged by the FA with using insulting or abusive language to fourth official Phil Dowd after Sunderland were given a late match-winning penalty.

He had to be held back by Jose Mourinho during a heated exchange with Dowd and was sent to the stands, however refused to leave the technical area which brought him another charge of improper conduct.

Faria had admitted both charges earlier this week and requested a non-personal hearing, where he has also been fined £30,000.

Mourinho denied a misconduct charge and demanded a hearing over comments about official Mike Dean and referees' chief Mike Riley following the defeat.

The Chelsea manager sarcastically "congratulated" the pair after the defeat, which ended his run of 77-unbeaten league games at Stamford Bridge and dented his side's title challenge before they beat Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday.

An FA statement read: "Following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing today, Chelsea's Rui Faria has been given a six-match stadium ban with immediate effect, subject to any appeal, after he admitted two breaches of FA Rules.

"The first breach was that Faria used abusive and/or insulting words towards the fourth official during Chelsea's game against Sunderland on 19 April 2014.

"The second breach was that his behaviour following the match referee's request that he leave the technical area amounted to improper conduct.

"Faria, who requested a non-personal hearing, was also fined £30,000 and warned as to his future conduct."

Earlier this season, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was given a seven-match stadium ban for headbutting Hull's David Meyler.
