Van Persie back in United squad

Robin van Persie returns to the Manchester United squad for the first time since suffering injury in their Champions League win over Olympiakos last month as he takes up a place on the bench against Sunderland.

However, Wayne Rooney misses out completely with illness as interim manager Ryan Giggs makes five changes to his starting XI.

Juan Mata and Javier Hernandez both start against Gus Poyet's side, while Nani and Ashley Young are also included. Adnen Januzaj, Marouane Fellaini and Danny Welbeck are all on the bench.

In-form Connor Wickham starts for teh away side, as does Fabio Borini, who scored the winning goal in Sunderland's recent shock Premier League victory at Chelsea.

Manchester United: De Gea, Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Nani, Carrick, Fletcher, Young, Mata, Hernandez.

Subs: Amos, Smalling, Valencia, Fellaini, Januzaj, Welbeck, Van Persie

Sunderland: Mannone, Vergini, Alonso, Brown, O'Shea (c), Cattermole, Larsson, Colback, Johnson, Borini, Wickham
