Arjen Robben could make a shock return to the Premier League should Louis van Gaal be confirmed as the new Manchester United manager.

The Sun claims Van Gaal will look to make the Dutch winger his first signing if he is unveiled as David Moyes' successor next week.

Robben already plays under Van Gaal for the Dutch national side. The 30-year-old signed a new deal at current club Bayern Munich earlier this season, which would keep him at the Allianz Arena until 2017, but United could make a £25 million move for him.

Following their calamitous Champions League exit to Real Madrid, the Bundesliga champions may look to offload Robben in a bid to strengthen their side.

Van Gaal, who signed Robben in 2009 while he was Bayern manager, would be keen to bring him back to England, seven years after the winger left Chelsea.

Van Gaal is expected to be given around £200 million to strengthen United's depleting squad following Moyes' disastrous tenure, which has seen the club miss out on Champions League football for the first time in 19 years.
