Manchester United director Sir Bobby Charlton has vowed that the club will knock Manchester City off their perch next season.

Neighbours City need just a point from their final game of the season on Sunday to become champions, with United 20 points behind them in seventh place after a dismal campaign which saw David Moyes just 10 months into his post-Sir Alex Ferguson reign.

City beat United home and away with 4-1 and 3-0 drubbings respectively, but Charlton says the Old Trafford club won't take the humiliation lying down.

"This year has been a tremendously interesting year,'' said Charlton, who is the club's all-time top goalscorer after making 758 appearances.

"We have done our best, we have changed manager, and it has not worked. But next year I guarantee that we will be number one in Manchester."

Charlton also confirmed that new signings will be made, with Louis van Gaal expected to be announced as Moyes' permanent successor next week.

"We will have to buy a couple of players, which will happen,'' added Charlton. I am looking forward a lot to next year because Manchester United is not renowned for being second.

"We like to be first and we will be first. We have the most fantastic organisation and that organisation when it works is unstoppable."
