Phil Jones is set to be fit for the World Cup after Ryan Giggs revealed his shoulder injury is not as severe as Manchester United initially feared.

Interim manager Giggs said the defender and Wayne Rooney - who has a groin problem - will both miss the final game of United's season, at Southampton on Sunday, but he is confident both will be able to take their places in Roy Hodgson's party to travel to Brazil.

The versatile Jones was taken to hospital with his arm in a sling after being hurt in a clash with Hull's Maynor Figueroa on Tuesday, prompting fears he would be ruled out of the tournament.

But Giggs said: "Phil's injury isn't as bad as I thought on the night. He is obviously out for Sunday but he should be alright for the World Cup."

Top scorer Rooney has missed United's two games with a groin injury and a stomach bug but Giggs said he is on the road to recovery.

He added: "Wayne has just started training over the last couple of days but Sunday's a little bit too quick so he will obviously train and be fine for the World Cup also."

Both injury bulletins are good news for Roy Hodgson, who will name his World Cup squad on Monday. The England manager already had fitness fears over Arsenal's Jack Wilshere, who is set to return from a foot injury on Sunday, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who Arsene Wenger says is at a crucial stage in his recovery from a groin problem.

Teenage striker James Wilson deputised for Rooney and scored twice on his United debut in the 3-1 win over Hull and Giggs has to decide whether to select the 18-year-old again at St Mary's.
