Hodgson lays down Lallana rules

Roy Hodgson will not stop Adam Lallana completing his impending transfer to Liverpool if a deal is agreed while he is at England's pre-World Cup training camps.

Lallana was included in Hodgson's initial 23-man squad for Brazil on Monday but the midfielder is closing in on a £20 million move to Liverpool, according to ESPN sources.

'I was hoping I'd be on the open-top bus'

• Roy Hodgson presented Brendan Rodgers with the LMA Manager of the Year award on Monday night, but the Liverpool boss wished he was somewhere different at the time.
• Rodgers narrowly missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City, but steered his side back into the Champions League following their seventh-place finish last season.
• However, after coming so close to ending the club's 24-year wait for the title, Rodgers joked: "I was hoping I'd been on the open top bus tonight."
• Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis was named Premier League Manager of the Year having steered the club clear of relegation. Palace had four league points when Pulis took over in November but, following a remarkable turnaround, they finished the season in 11th.

Hodgson said: "If we were in Miami and it was a last minute thing and they wanted to send a doctor over and we had a free afternoon and could Adam Lallana go and do a medical in his free afternoon, I am not going to say: 'You can't do that'."

England fly to Portugal for a training camp on Monday and go to Miami for further preparations on June 1, after they have played Peru at Wembley. They are due to arrive in Brazil on June 8 and their first World Cup game, against Italy, is on June 14.

Hodgson hopes any potential transfers affecting members of his squad will be wrapped up before they travel to Miami and has warned agents not to distract their clients' focus on the national team.

"You don't control players moving or being the subject of transfer speculation, this is something which happens," Hodgson said. "What I make very, very clear to everyone is that I accept the reality of the situation and anything that happens is not going to be allowed to affect us.

"You sign up for this World Cup and you sign up to do a good job for England. Your club future is what it is and it will be taken care of outside of England time. That is all I can do.

"I was asked: 'Would you like all of this to be sorted before you go to Miami?' " Hodgson said. "Of course I would. It is not an ideal world and that might not happen but the one thing I am going to be very firm on.

"When we are together with England we are England and it is England that matters. If you have got matters to resolve you do it outside England time. England is England and your club is your club. The two are not married together. I don't try as England manager to have any effect on you and your club and what you do at your club."

Southampton are said to be holding out for more money for Lallana and Hodgson said: "I am definitely not going to have agents swirling around or having this player having to leave the camp. I would expect the players to understand that."

Coates in contention to face England

• Sebastian Coates has been included in Uruguay coach Oscar Washington Tabarez's 25-man preliminary squad for this summer's World Cup.
• Liverpool defender Coates was sidelined for almost eight months after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury on international duty last August, but has been on the comeback trail at former club Nacional, whom he joined on loan in January.
• Uruguay will face England, Italy and Costa Rica in Group D in Brazil.

Luke Shaw is another of Hodgson's young guns whose future remains unclear. The Southampton defender, who was preferred ahead of the experienced Ashley Cole, is on the verge of a £25m move to Manchester United with only personal terms yet to be agreed.

Hodgson dismissed the notion Shaw might have a "scrambled brain" over his potential move and has Dr Steve Peters, the psychologist hired by Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool, accompanying England to help if he is wrong.

"I would like to contest the 'scrambled brain' issue,'' Hodgson said. "From what I know of him he's quite a strong lad mentally. But he will get a lot of help from us to make sure his head doesn't get scrambled.

"We have to wait and hope that a] it gets resolved quickly if there's any resolution to be done and b] that it doesn't scramble people's heads.''
