Bayern Munich attacker Thomas Mueller says he has a "special relationship" with new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.

Mueller broke into the German club's first team as a 19-year-old during Van Gaal's time in charge and, with the Dutchman now confirmed as United's new boss, has been linked with a reunion at Old Trafford.

Mueller, now 24, is reportedly frustrated by his lack of first-team opportunities under manager Pep Guardiola and both the player and his agent have done little to discourage speculation about a move to the Premier League.

"It's no secret that Louis van Gaal and I have a special relationship," Mueller told Sport Bild. "But, as everyone knows, I also have a special relationship with Bayern Munich. I am under contract at Bayern until 2017.

"We have just won the domestic double and now I am looking forward to the World Cup. I have the feeling that I will play an important role at Bayern - and I 100% identify with the club and the people around the club. That's a fact."

He added: "I enjoy playing for Bayern - actually, there is nothing nicer."

Although Mueller has cast doubt on the prospect of him moving to United, multiple sources have told ESPN that the English club believe they have made significant advancements in their pursuit of his Bayern team-mate Toni Kroos.
