Simeone targets Argentina job

UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso following Saturday's fiery Champions League final.

Simeone faces action after his "dismissal from the bench" while UEFA cites a "breach of general principles of conduct" regarding Alonso.

The Argentine confronted Real's Raphael Varane during extra time of his side's 4-1 loss in Lisbon after the defender kicked the ball towards him following Cristiano Ronaldo's late goal from the penalty spot.

Simeone claimed Varane's actions in front of the Atletico bench amid Real's celebrations were unsporting and booted the ball back at the 21-year-old before running over to confront him.

"He's a great player and he has a great life ahead of him," Simeone said at his post-match press conference. "But it was just ugly. At 4-1 it was pointless to create that."

The manager was then reprimanded by referee Bjorn Kuipers for his actions, having also run onto the pitch at the end of the first-half of extra time to vent his anger at the Dutch official over the five minutes he added on in normal time before Sergio Ramos levelled the match.

Simeone's case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body on July 17.

UEFA does not provide specifics of Alonso's charge, although footage has shown the Spaniard, who was suspended for the final, leaving his seat and running along the touchline.

Both sides have also been charged for receiving more than five yellow cards each.
