Fabio Capello has said he will not resign after England exited the World Cup at the second round with a 4-1 defeat to Germany.

Capello came under heavy pressure after the 0-0 draw with Algeria left England's hopes of reaching the second round in doubt, but they put in a much-improved perfomance against Slovenia to book a clash with Germany.

The embarrassing defeat on Sunday, though, will prompt further calls for the Italian to leave yet, while he has confirmed he will seek a meeting with the Football Association, it appears he has no intention of walking away.

"I want to speak with the chairman and then decide my future. I need to know whether the FA have confidence in me or not," he said. Asked if he would resign, he replied: "Absolutely not."

He added: "When you lose, the manager gets criticised. We didn't play too badly in the first game against USA, just made a big mistake. We played a bad game against Algeria but we played well against Slovenia. Today, if the referee had whistled for the goal, it would have been different. It was too big a mistake."

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp believes Capello should remain in charge. "This guy is good, he has a great record and I think we have to look at the whole thing," he said on the BBC. "I have confidence in him. It's not time to chop and change."

The FA did offer Capello its public backing as calls for his head grew after the game. "Our position has been consistent and it has not changed in my mind whatsoever," said Adrian Bevington, the managing director of Club England.

"Clearly, Fabio needs to speak with Sir Dave and, beyond that, I cannot say anything further. There is a board - Sir Dave, myself, Sir Trevor Brooking and chief executive Alex Horne - and we work into the main FA board as well. But nothing has changed in my mind from before the game."

England captain Steven Gerrard said: "The manager is disappointed obviously. He was only in the dressing room briefly after the game but you could see the disappointment on his face. I'm sure Fabio will stay and he'll address his own situation very soon. Personally, I'd like him to stay as I think he's a fantastic manager."
