Uruguay striker Luis Suarez jogged on a football pitch on Friday for the first time since knee surgery two weeks ago.

Suarez did stretching exercises and some light jogging during a Uruguay team training session on the outskirts of Montevideo, said Jose Herrera, one of the team's physical trainers.

The Liverpool striker worked out for around 25 minutes, he added.

"All the steps he has taken so far have been positive," Herrera told the Associated Press.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said on Friday that Suarez's recovery is progressing as expected.

"So far, so good, and that gives us hope that he will continue improving," said Tabarez. He would not speculate on when Suarez might be able to play.

The top goalscorer last season in the Premier League did not play in Uruguay's two warm-up matches before the World Cup, a 1-0 win against Northern Ireland followed by a 2-0 victory over Slovenia.

Suarez had surgery on his left knee on May 22 in Montevideo after feeling pain during training with the national team.

Uruguay will travel to Brazil on Monday for the World Cup, and play their first match on June 14 against Costa Rica. Italy and England are in the same group.
