Germany winger Reus ruled out with ankle injury

Injury concerns mounting for Germany

Marco Reus has been ruled out of Germany's World Cup campaign with a partially torn ligament in his left ankle.

The Dortmund winger, a long-term transfer target for Manchester United, rolled his ankle during Germany's 6-1 win over Armenia in a friendly on Friday.

Reus' was seen crying on the side of the pitch after being taken off and Germany revealed the extent of the injury on their website.

He was taken to Mainz University Hospital, according to Bild, which reported Reus tore his anterior tibiofibular ligament between the tibia and fibula, and German press officer Jens Grittner confirmed on Saturday that Reus would not make the trip to Brazil, with Shkodran Mustafi called up to replace him in the 23-man squad.

"I have to wait four more years," Reus said. "It's heartbreaking for me, but that's life and that's football.

"All the best for my team-mates. I will be their biggest supporter."

Coach Joachim Loew had said on the DfB website: "That's most unfortunate for him and us. Marco had been in great form, left an superb impression in the training camp and in both matches against Cameroon and Armenia. He played a central role in our plans for Brazil."

Lukas Podolski replaced Reus in the game against Armenia, scoring once and setting up two more goals.

Germany face the United States, Portugal and Ghana in Group G, with their first game against Portugal on June 16.
