Giroud faces fight for place with new Arsenal striker

Olivier Giroud expects to have to fight for his place at Arsenal when he returns from World Cup duty with France.

The striker, who was on the scoresheet as France thrashed Jamaica 8-0 in their final warm-up match on Sunday, is confident that manager Arsene Wenger will sign at least one top-class forward for next season.

And Giroud, who scored 22 goals in all competitions last season, says he is prepared to compete with any new arrivals as Arsenal look to strengthen after ending their nine-year wait for a trophy with victory in last month's FA Cup final.

"I can tell you Arsenal will add a striker to the team," Giroud to French website InfoSport+.

"We need another striker. Great clubs have several good strikers, who compete with each other."

Among the competition Giroud is likely to face is former Arsenal forward Carlos Vela, who is understood to be heading back to the Emirates after the club activated a clause in his Real Sociedad contract.

Vela, who made his Arsenal debut in 2008, endured a difficult spell at the Emirates before being shipped out to Sociedad in 2011. But his 16 goals in 34 appearances last season have prompted Arsenal to offer a reported £3.5m to bring him back to north London.
