Southampton defender Dejan Lovren has reportedly handed in a transfer request amid interest from Liverpool.

According to the Daily Mail, Lovren sent an email to chairman Ralph Krueger and executive director Les Reed on May 30 informing them he wants to leave the club to play in the Champions League next season.

Liverpool, who signed Rickie Lambert from Southampton for £4 million, have been strongly linked with a move for Lovren and retain an interest in buying captain Adam Lallana.

Prior to the email, Lovren held talks with Southampton at the end of the season. The Daily Mail says that Southampton are yet to acknowledge receipt of his signed email.

Lovren joined from Lyon for £7m last summer and impressed under the now-departed manager Mauricio Pochettino as Southampton finished eighth in the Premier League last season.

Southampton are bracing themselves for the exit of several of their main stars instrumental in that success following Pochettino's decision to join Tottenham.

With Lovren the second player likely to follow Lambert out of the club, Southampton look set to lose Lallana to Liverpool and Luke Shaw to Manchester United after the World Cup as well.
