David Luiz has joined Paris Saint-Germain in a five-year deal reported to be worth around £50 million pounds from Chelsea.

The Brazilian defender has made way for the signings of Cesc Fabregas and an expected deal for Diego Costa, and will link up with his new team-mates in the aftermath of the World Cup.

Luiz told the PSG website: "Right from the very first contact I had with Paris Saint-Germain, I was very happy. It's big club with a great history and a huge project.

"It has fantastic facilities and a lot of supporters. It's a new step in my life and I'm impatient to play for Paris and show what I can do. I also can't wait to play with my new team-mates, the Brazilians, of course, but also everybody else.

"I played my first match in Europe, with Benfica, against Paris Saint-Germain in Paris [UEFA Europa League last-16 first leg in 2007]. My first match in European competition was at the Parc des Princes. Now we can continue this history together, and I hope in the best possible way.

"I already knew about Paris Saint-Germain when I was in Brazil because a lot of great players had played for the club. Paris Saint-Germain already has a great and successful history. Like I said, my first match in Europe was against Paris Saint-Germain. To sign for this great team is really special for me."

Luiz and his team-mates helped Brazil to a controversial World Cup opening victory against Croatia on Thursday.
