Portugal defender Pepe has received a one-match suspension after picking up a red card in the 4-0 loss to Germany in their opening game at the World Cup.

The 31-year-old was sent off for a confrontation with Thomas Mueller that saw him headbutt the forward while he was on the ground.

As a result, the Real Madrid player will sit out Sunday's Group G clash against the USA - a game Portugal need to secure a result from. Pepe will, however, return for the final group game against Ghana.

As well as the ban, FIFA has also fined Pepe £9,860.

Elsewhere, world football's governing body has also given Uruguay defender Maxi Pereira a one-match suspension.

Pereira will miss Tuesday's game against England after kicking out at Joel Campbell during the 3-1 loss to Costa Rica on Saturday.
