Pepe Reina has heard nothing from Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers about the chances of resurrecting his career at the club as he prepares to return to Anfield.

The goalkeeper spent last season on loan at Napoli and made 41 appearances for the Serie A side under former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez - who signed him in 2005 from Villarreal.

Napoli, however, have ruled out signing Reina on a permanent basis, despite a clause in his contract allowing him to leave for £4.2 million, with wages said to be a problem.

"I've not spoken to Rodgers and I don't know what they think but I have a contract and in the end that is what counts," Reina said.

"I have to join up with Liverpool and there's nothing more I can do. I don't know about my future. I want to be calm about it and there are people who are working on that. I have two years left on my Liverpool contract and the situation is the same as a month ago."

In February, Rodgers considered Reina's Liverpool career to be over after he wrote an open goodbye letter to the fans before joining Napoli.

The former Barcelona goalkeeper has been linked with a return back to La Liga, but now appears ready to fight for his place as the Liverpool No.1 - despite Simon Mignolet establishing himself last season.

On leaving Napoli, Reina added: "I said goodbye to Rafa at the end of the season and he knows the conditions that exist. At the moment things are like that."
