Manchester City have insisted Alvaro Negredo is not for sale as speculation links the striker with a switch to Atletico Madrid.

La Liga champions Atletico - also last season's Champions League finalists - have lost David Villa, who is moving to New York City FC, while leading scorer Diego Costa is likely to sign for Chelsea.

While Negredo is a reported target for Atletico, sources told ESPN FC that City had no intention of letting the 28-year-old leave.

The Premier League champions have yet to receive a bid for him from Atletico, despite reports in Spain suggesting that he will make a £20 million move.

Negredo, who joined City from Sevilla last July, scored 23 goals in his debut season but failed to find the net after January; a loss of form that cost him his place in Spain's World Cup squad.

He ended the campaign on the bench as manager Manuel Pellegrini preferred to pair Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero in attack, but the Chilean wants to keep him.
