Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has praised the appointment of Roy Hodgson and believes that the former Fulham boss is "the right man for the job".

Hodgson was confirmed as the new man at the Anfield helm on Thursday, signing a three-year contract. He will be the first permanent English manager that has had sole charge of Gerrard at club level, after the midfielder made his debut 16 days after the departure of Roy Evans, although doubts remain as to whether the Liverpool skipper will stay on Merseyside.

There has been plenty of speculation linking Gerrard with a move to Real Madrid, with Jose Mourinho a keen admirer since he so nearly signed him at Chelsea. However, Gerrard has issued the most positive signal yet that he will complete his career as a one-club man.

"The club have made a good appointment in Roy Hodgson,'' Gerrard said. "Rafa [Benitez] left a few weeks ago and I know the club were determined to take their time and get the right man for the job.

"Roy is hugely experienced and I believe he is the right man for Liverpool."I think it's been worth the wait and I'm sure he's just keen now to get on with it and start to quickly put in place his plans for the new season.''
