Van Gaal ready to end Fellaini pain

Marouane Fellaini's disastrous spell as Manchester United player looks to be coming to an end after new manager Louis Van Gaal instructed the club to sell him, according to the Daily Mail.

Fellaini, widely considered a flop at Old Trafford since his £27 million move from Everton last summer, has featured heavily in Belgium's World Cup campaign and scored after coming on as a substitute in their opening game in Brazil.

However, the newspaper claims Van Gaal has told his new club's bosses that Fellaini is "not a United type of player" and wants chief executive Ed Woodward to offload the midfielder before the start of the new season.

It also suggests that Van Gaal has been vocal in who he wants to keep at the club and who he believes can move on.

Fellaini was bought by Van Gaal's predecessor David Moyes, who was sacked by United in April following a calamitous 10-month spell in charge, but struggled for form and with injuries as the team endured their worst campaign for years.

Moyes, though, consistently defended Fellaini's contribution at United despite the 26-year-old attracting widespread criticism over his performances.

Belgium's World Cup quarter-final with Argentina on Saturday could prove to be Fellaini's last chance to impress in a bid to engineer a good move away from Manchester. The 26-year-old is unlikely to be available for the start of United's pre-season tour of America, which begins July 21, so may not get a chance to persuade Van Gaal otherwise - despite his intentions to prove his worth.
