Jamie Carragher has vowed to do everything he can to help Roy Hodgson push Liverpool back to the top of the tree.

Carragher has confirmed he will no longer be available for England, having come out of retirement to aid the team at the World Cup, and his focus is now on club matters at Anfield.

Liverpool had a torrid time by their own high standards last season and Hodgson has been drafted in to restore past glories. The new Reds boss has spoken in glowing terms of Carragher, insisting he is the heartbeat of the club, and the defender is determined to do his utmost to aid the new regime.

"There were a few injuries towards the end of the season and I was delighted to help out and play in a World Cup and work for Capello," Carragher told TalkSport.

"But I have always said the most important thing for me is Liverpool Football Club and I want to do my utmost now for the club.

"We have a new boss now in Roy Hodgson and I want to do everything I can to help him and help the club get back up where we belong."

One of Hodgson's first tasks will be to persuade Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres to commit their futures to the club and Carragher expects the club's big stars to remain at Anfield.

"I think there is a lot of talk about this but the people who say these things, a lot of them are doing this to create a bit of pressure around the club," he said. "I don't think anyone knows these people personally to come out and say that.

"I am sure they will still be involved at the club next season and if they are the aim for the club will be to get back into the Champions League."
