Adebayor diagnosed with malaria

Emmanuel Adebayor will miss Tottenham's pre-season tour to North America after being diagnosed with Malaria.

Adebayor, 30, was admitted to hospital on Saturday after he reported feeling unwell to Tottenham medical staff.

In a statement, Tottenham said that Adebayor was responding well to treatment and is due to be released from hospital on Tuesday.

The striker however, will need a further seven days rest at home before he can return to training and has been advised by doctors not to travel.

Tottenham are due to play Seattle Sounders on Saturday in the first of three matches against MLS opposition. After Seattle, they will face Toronto FC - the new home of former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe - on July 23 before meeting Chicago Fire on July 26.

Adebayor enjoyed an impressive season last term after Tim Sherwood replaced Andre Villas-Boas as manager and will be disappointed to miss out on the chance to make an early impression on new boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Tottenham have endured a quiet summer in the transfer market so far, with efforts to sign new men such as Belgian teenager Divock Origi and Swansea left-back Ben Davies bearing little fruit.

Pochettino's struggles in the transfer market are reported to come from the reluctance of club stalwarts to leave White Hart Lane. The Daily Mirror reports that Gylfi Sigurdsson and Michael Dawson want to stay at the club despite being told they are surplus to requirements.

Sigurdsson has been made available for £10 million, with Swansea thought to be keen to bring back a player they took on loan two years ago.

Club captain Dawson is reportedly a £5m target for Hull City, but the defender is refusing to speak to last season's FA Cup runners-up unless they are prepared to offer him a four-year deal.

Dawson has two years left on his contract at White Hart Lane, but Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is prepared to sacrifice his talisman to allow Pochettino to strengthen the defence - an area the Argentinian has targeted as in need of reinforcements.
