World Cup final on the London underground

London commuters travelling during Sunday's World Cup final were still able to follow Germany's 1-0 win over Argentina thanks to live commentary and analysis of the match in Rio de Janeiro at Waterloo station.

Germany's fourth World Cup triumph was relayed over the public address system at London's busiest train station by sports presenter Scott Minto and former Germany international Steffen Freund.

Ex-Chelsea defender Minto gave commuters updates on the match while Freund, who won the 1996 European Championship with his country at Wembley and the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund the following year, provided the colour commentary.

Freund, now assistant head coach at Tottenham Hotspur, lost any remaining veneer of impartiality when his reaction to Mario Gotze's dramatic extra-time winner at the Maracana was broadcast all around Waterloo's underground platforms and main concourse.

The unique World Cup coverage was part of ESPN FC's collaboration with Transport for London (TfL), the operators of the capital's transport network.

Throughout the tournament in Brazil, ESPN FC provided updates on live scores and breaking news via the electronic signs on station platforms and ticket halls across the city.
