Bayern Munich have confirmed talks are ongoing with Real Madrid over a potential transfer to the Bernabeu for World Cup winner Toni Kroos.

Speaking to the media at the arrival of Bayern's Germany players at Munich airport on Tuesday afternoon, Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed to reporters that the Bundesliga champions and Real are currently negotiating a deal for the midfielder.

"There are talks between Bayern and Real," Rummenigge said. "We don't want to lose the player on a free next season."

Kroos, 24, is in the final year of his contract at Bayern and said a "dream" move to Real was close after Germany's World Cup final triumph on Sunday.

On Monday, Kroos' agent Volker Struth said there would be an announcement within 48 hours.

Kroos has been linked with a move away from the club ever since refusing to prolong his contract in January. He reportedly was unhappy with Bayern's offer and did not feel the club honoured his status.

The midfielder had first been linked with a switch to Manchester United, but the club's interest cooled when Louis van Gaal was appointed as manager at Old Trafford.

Last week, Spanish media reported the transfer fee for Kroos, who scored two goals and set up four during Germany's title winning campaign at the World Cup, is expected to be somewhere in the region of £19.7 million.
