Chelsea have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid to sign left-back Filipe Luis subject to the player completing a medical and agreeing personal terms.

The Brazilian, 28, had been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge to fill the void left by Ashley Cole, who last week joined Roma, and both clubs have now confirmed a fee has been agreed.

"Chelsea Football Club can confirm an agreement has been reached with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Filipe Luis," a short statement on the club's website read.

Chelsea had an initial bid of £12 million rejected by the La Liga champions but having missed out on Luke Shaw, Jose Mourinho was prepared to make a renewed offer in order to capture his primary target. Atletico have already brought in a replacement in Guilherme Siquiera but were not prepared to let Luis leave for less than his buy-out clause which is believed to be £20m.

He is poised to become the third player to move from the Spanish capital to west London after Diego Costa's £32m move was confirmed yesterday while it is expected Tiago Mendes will sign on a two-year deal.

In a statement on their website, the club confirmed Luis had informed them of his intention to leave at the end of last season. During his four seasons at the Vicente Calderon ,he won a league title, Copa del Rey, Europa League and European Super Cup medal.
