Manchester United's Tom Cleverley believes Louis van Gaal can revive his flagging Old Trafford career and says he is the type of player that can thrive under the Dutchman.

The midfielder started just 18 Premier League games last season and missed out on England's World Cup squad amid heavy criticism of his performances, but he believes that a summer of rest and the arrival of Van Gaal can help him rediscover top form.

"I managed to have a good break and recharged the batteries, and it's definitely an exciting time under a new manager who we're all trying to impress. And we definitely see it as a fresh start," Cleverley said on Friday.

"I think I can be his type of player. I have to show that in training and, most importantly, in the games, but I think there's a place for me, but I have to prove that."

Van Gaal has already bolstered his midfield with Ander Herrera, who shone on his United debut in the 7-0 thrashing of the LA Galaxy earlier this week.

United are also believed to be targeting Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, but with Michael Carrick facing up to three months out after ankle surgery Cleverley, 24, will get the chance to impress his new manager on Saturday.

Van Gaal revealed that Cleverley will be one of two players who will play the entire game - Tyler Blackett is the other - when United meet Roma at Sports Authority Field.

Cleverley also revealed Van Gaal has made quite clear his ideas and coaching philosophy.

"We play a passing and moving style, and that's what the manager wants," he said. "I don't think there can be any problems when he is so clear what he wants, and everything is going smoothly so far."
