Ospina could become first choice, says Wenger
Arsene Wenger has revealed Arsenal are on the verge of signing David Ospina and says the goalkeeper could oust Wojciech Szczesny as No.1 at the club.
Ospina has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal after a string of impressive performances for Colombia during the World Cup and it's expected he will complete his £3.2 million move from Nice imminently.
Wenger admits Ospina will begin as Szczesny's understudy but expects the 25-year-old to press his claim to become first choice.
"You know at the start Szczensy will be the No.1, then again we'll be down to performances and, if Ospina shows that he is better, he will play," Wenger said.
Ospina, who has made 40 appearances for his country, spent the last six seasons in Ligue 1 and his arrival will offset the loss of Lukasz Fabianski who joined Swansea City on a free transfer this summer.
The FA Cup winners are currently in America where they'll play Thierry Henry's New York Red Bulls in a friendly on Saturday before finalising preparations for the new season with next week's Emirates Cup.
Now Wenger claims Arsenal have shown they can compete in the transfer market in order to stage a sustained challenge for silverware next season.
"That's what our target is but still I think we have been very consistent," he said.
"It was a very different period because we built a new stadium and had to pay it back. We survived at the top level but we want more.
"We are now on an even ground with the other clubs than we were five or six years ago.
"We bought some good players like Alexis Sanchez who will give us different options. And overall last season, we were for a long time top of the league and we lost - you know we had many injuries and hopefully this year we will be injury-free and start very well."
Arsenal face Manchester City in the Community Shield before opening their Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace.
