Liverpool make Falcao inquiry

Liverpool have reportedly made an inquiry about Radamel Falcao's availability but have been told the striker is heading to Real Madrid.

Falcao is set to depart Monaco on loan this summer, and, according to the Times, Liverpool looked into bringing him to Anfield following the departure of Luis Suarez.

He has only just returned from a serious knee injury which ruled him out of the World Cup, scoring against Arsenal in a 1-0 win for Monaco during his second game back.

However, it has been made clear to Liverpool that Falcao is determined to return to Madrid, where he spent two successful years with Real's city rivals Atletico before joining Monaco last summer.

The £12 million loan fee Monaco are asking for, along with Falcao's £10m-per-year wages after tax, have also cooled interest from Anfield.

Brendan Rodgers has admitted he is still searching for another striker this summer as he bids to replace Suarez.

Liverpool have so far been frustrated in their attempts to do so, with a move for Loic Remy collapsing after a failed medical and Alexis Sanchez opting to join Arsenal instead of going the other way to Anfield as part of the Suarez deal with Barcelona.

Rodgers brought Rickie Lambert back to his childhood club in a £4m deal before the World Cup but with Daniel Sturridge nursing a hamstring injury and Fabio Borini being lined up by Sunderland for £14m, Liverpool could be short of options up front for their Premier League opener against Southampton on August 17.

Rodgers has already brought in seven new faces this summer as he bids to bolster his squad for their return to Champions League football after a five-year absence and could yet take Liverpool's spending past the £100m mark.
