Arteta named new Arsenal captain
Mikel Arteta has been confirmed as Arsenal's new captain by manager Arsene Wenger following the 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City at Wembley.
Arteta, who was vice-captain to Thomas Vermaelen before the latter's departure to Barcelona, served as skipper for much of last season when the centre-back was out of the side through injury or selection.
Wenger also revealed Germany World Cup-winner Per Mertesacker would be the club's new vice-captain.
"It will be No.1 Arteta and No.2 Mertesacker," Wenger told Arsenal's official website.
Arteta was quick to take to social media to express his delight. He tweeted: "Great to lift another trophy and a massive honour to be named captain of Arsenal. Let's have a great season."
He added: "Being captain is a big honour and a privilege, with a big responsibility. I will try to stand up and do my best for my players."
